1 If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
2 if the Lord had not been on our side
when people attacked us,
3 they would have swallowed us alive
when their anger flared against us;
4 the flood would have engulfed us,
the torrent would have swept over us,
5 the raging waters
would have swept us away.
6 Praise be to the Lord,
who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
7 We have escaped like a bird
from the fowler’s snare;
the snare has been broken,
and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 124 (NIV)
Holy God, Your word assures us that when the waters of life rage over us, You are there. We come before You today with great awe and reverence saying, “our hope is in You, blessed be Your Name.”
We pray for those in church pews who are struggling with whether to remain in or leave their church behind. We pray for those for whom church attendance represents pain and trauma. We pray for those who are searching for a new church family that will nurture them, accept them, and love them the way You do.
We pray our world as it deals with devastations like famine, destructive storms, and more. We pray for your protection and comfort for those affected. We pray also for those in government, that they will have courage, wisdom, and compassion necessary to lead effectively.
For our nation as we seek to dig out the toxic weed of systemic racism from every place it has taken root, we pray for eyes to be opened, ears to hear the truth, and for healing and reconciliation to abound.
We pray for those who are struggling from illness, financial stress, or other concerns that weigh on their hearts. We pray especially for those in our hearts at this moment.
Mother God, You are our Great Protector. You calm the seas that threaten to overtake us. You deliver us from the enemies that pursue us. You are our safe place in a world filled with uncertainty. We thank you and we praise You for Your constant and loving presence in our lives.
In the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray.
