A Prayer For August 2, 2020

Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
    give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
From you let my vindication come;
    let your eyes see the right.

If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
    if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
    my mouth does not transgress.
As for what others do, by the word of your lips
    I have avoided the ways of the violent.
My steps have held fast to your paths;
    my feet have not slipped.

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
    incline your ear to me, hear my words.
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
    O savior of those who seek refuge
    from their adversaries at your right hand.

As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
    when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Psalm 17:1-7, 15 (NRSV)

Oh God who sees,
We pray that you will see our hearts today.
See how we cling to Your words and Your promises,
When others choose to trust in people and institutions instead.
See how we speak the truth,
Where others spread fear and lies to protect their own interests and agendas.
See into our souls and know that no deception lies within us
For we are people of The Truth

Oh God who hears,
We pray that you will hear the voices crying out
Voices of those who long for connection
Voices of those who long for acceptance
Voices of those who long for comfort
Hear the unspoken prayers of those who have run out of faith
Hear the unspoken desires of those who struggle to hope
God who hears
Hear your children calling out to you.

Oh God who knows,
You know the trials of every beating heart
You know the number of tears cried
You know us in our darkest hours
There will never be a moment unknown to You
And we know, even in the moments we cannot feel it,
Your love for each of us overflows with every second
And never lets us wander in the dark alone

Oh God who loves,
Let Your love be a refuge for those needing shelter
Let Your love be the mother’s embrace for those needing comfort
Let Your love be the gentle voice in the wind for those who need to hear it
Let Your love guide this world, and those who lead it, to safety and health

We thank you for being:
The God who sees
The God who hears
The God who knows
The God who loves
And we thank You for Your presence in our world today.

In the name of your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, we pray.

Amen.
