What Shame Tells You

Shame tells you that you are different.

Shame tells you that there is something fundamentally wrong with you.

Shame tells you that you have to hide so that no one knows how broken you are.

Shame tells you that no one will love you as you are.

Shame tells you that you will never be accepted for who you are.

Shame tells you that you are alone.

Shame tells you that no one could ever understand you.

Shame is a bully. Shame is a jackass. Shame is a liar. Shame is abusive.

Don’t listen to the lies it whispers into your ears.

You are okay.

You are more than okay. You are inherently worthy of love and affection because you are you.

This world has never known a you before. It will never know a you again. You have gifts and insights and truths to share that no one else in this world can do the way you can. And no one ever will.

You are needed.

Don’t hide away. Don’t hide what you feel is your ugliness from the world. Don’t hide your struggles. Don’t hide your fights. Connect. Share. Receive and give strength.

Because there is someone in this world who thinks that they are alone. Because shame is telling them that no one could understand their pain – the pain that you have walked with, sat with, lived with – and shame tells them that no one wants to hear them voice their hurt.

Shame is an asshole.
